The team at the Royal BC Museum reached out to us to help them promote an upcoming Dinosaur exhibition. No brainer. Royal BC Museum + Dinosaurs = Awesome. The Royal BC Museum is located in Victoria, BC and has some amazing permanent exhibitions, including the Natural History collection.
We crafted an idea around the animals in the Natural History collection being surprised when a Dinosaur shows up in their space. This helped showcase the museum’s permanent collections as well as introduce a feature exhibition.
We shot in the museum at night when it was closed (which is a super cool environment to be in). We used a huge crane to create the sweeping movements around the animals, while still being able to stay a safe distance away. Once we had the footage back at the studio, we proceeded to add some subtle animation to the animals to help ‘bring them to life.’ We added a 3D wooden crate to the forest for our Dinosaur to break out of, as well as a 3D T-Rex at the end which surprises a curious otter.
What We Learned
It’s easy to see where the idea for Night at the Museum came from. Hanging out in a museum at night is insanely cool. And a bit unnerving.
